Sizes and pricing

How prices work, and how to offer an item in multiple sizes where the size sets the price.

This guide explains how an item is priced and how to offer it in more than one size.

Single-price items

Most items have one price. You set that price on the item itself, and that is what the customer pays before any add-ons. This is the simplest case — a can of pop, a single dessert — and nothing more is needed.

Items with sizes

When an item comes in more than one size — small and large, 10-inch and 14-inch — the size is what sets the price. In PayperPlates you handle this with a Size · Price option group attached to the item. Each size in the group is one choice with its own price, and the customer picks exactly one.

Set sizes up in Inventory, in the Option Groups section:

  1. Create an option group of type Size · Price (shown as "SIZE").
  2. Add a choice for each size — for example "Small", "Medium", "Large".
  3. Give every size its own price. A size group requires a price on every size; the size the customer chooses becomes the item's base price.
  4. Attach the group to the item.

Because the selected size is the price, a size group is always required and the customer must choose one before adding the item to their cart.

Sizes versus add-ons

Keep sizes and add-ons separate:

  • A size sets the base price and the customer picks exactly one (Small or Large).
  • An add-on (a topping, a side) adds to the price and the customer may pick several. Add-ons are ordinary option groups — see Modifiers and option groups.

An item can have both: a size group that sets the base price, plus add-on groups for extras on top.

Taxes and fees

Item and size prices are the pre-tax amounts customers see on the menu. Your tax rate, any minimum order amount, and tip options are set once for the whole restaurant under Settings → Ordering & Payments, and apply at checkout. See Payment options.

Changing a price

Open the item (or its size group) and update the price; the change shows on your storefront right away. For a fast one-off change mid-shift, use the Change a price quick action or just ask the assistant to do it and confirm.
